There are tons of things about my childhood I would love to repeat- summer's off, no worries about finances, Verdolini's Pizza- but this whole Russian Scare bullsh*t is not one of them.

Anyone care to weigh in on the LJ stay/go thought trolley? All opinions respected.

Apparently, LJ has turned off HTTPS everywhere except their payment page.

I'm still leaving. I might keep the account for commenting, but I'm even rethinking that.

Well, that certainly doesn't look good, does it?

I'm trying to weigh the obvious change of law that comes with the move against/with my feeling that my LJ is filled with stuff that's worthless.

Logically, I know that's really not the point. Emotionally, not as clear.

Thanks for the link! I did a skim and will give it a full read later. It really does sound like a move is wise.

Social media? Meet social conscious.

I'm on the fence. There are so few people who post regularly here anymore -- but I'm not sure dreamwidth is any more active and I feel cranky about losing the communities.

Still, the privacy violations I'm hearing rumblings about are alarming. What are you leaning towards?

At the moment I'm leaning toward ... nothing. Lol

It does seem like the smart/safe thing to do is move. LJ will- if the info is correct- no longer protect your password/content. If Russia wasn't involved, we'd all be screaming about leaving, offering alternative medias, etc.

The flip side of that is- I never use this thing! My personal reaction seems- well- overblown? Which is silly if it's simply a matter of security.

And, I am already crap and keeping up with people, I'm afraid I'll loose more (in friends) than I would gain (in security).

There's a link above with some food info, if you want to look.

Honestly, I think the biggest risk is that the servers will be taken down without notice and LJ will disappear, because the Russian authorities now have direct jurisdiction over the server location. At the very least I'm going to be backing up at DW more.

AFAIK, LJ has never really used https for anything other than login and payments, so unless people forced an https connection, then everything else -- posts, comments etc -- has always been fetched over an http connection. I'm not sure whether logins are generally still being handled securely or not (I don't understand how the pop-up login box functions) but is still working fine.

Hmmm... the whole thing going poof is not something I really thought about.

I swear, I'm the only person who does not have a DW account. Lol

I am just SO MAD that I won't have comms access.

I think that one issue is, with servers in Russia, that the rules about privacy that protect us on US/Canadian servers no longer apply. I don't think it matters much to 99.9% of LJ users, but if you are a) political or b) dabble in fandoms that are less mainstream/have had issues around "is this pedo? is this illegal?" before, that something could happen. (I don't know WHAT. just... delete your journal? turn shit over to the fbi? I know just enough to be freaked out. I need to read more...)

Anyway, I'm going to keep posting at DW with xposts here, but I may turn off comments here, which will suck. But not as much as losing comments if LJ just shuts down.

You know, just the idea that somebody could be randomly riffling through my posts makes me feel really uneasy. And I have so little to be concearned about, really. Just. The whole notion.

Truly- the flashback emotional baggage that comes with all the Russian business does not come with the unwavering bravado of youth. And that sucks. I'm actually getting scared about where it's all going. Not LJ, really (though, dammit, I am so tired of loosing friends because I don't migrate to each new social platform) but the big picture. The things that really matter.

I don't know. Most people I follow crosspost to DW already but I would miss the few who don't if I left.

On the other hand, I really don't want to give Russian security agencies any information, even though I don't think I'm doing anything that they would be particularly interested in.

(There are multiple ways to download / make backups of your LJ, btw! Importing to DW is just one of them.)

The idea of loosing friends coupled with random Russians having free access.....shudder.

(Tell me more?! Please!)

No personal experience with any of these, but I've seen them linked:

DW is a really good option too, though! Even if you didn't use you account for anything other thank backups. The import tool is easy to use and you can import multiple times, eg. once a year just in case, and it only imports what's been added since your previous backup.
