(no subject)

There are tons of things about my childhood I would love to repeat- summer's off, no worries about finances, Verdolini's Pizza- but this whole Russian Scare bullsh*t is not one of them.

Anyone care to weigh in on the LJ stay/go thought trolley? All opinions respected.

Apparently, LJ has turned off HTTPS everywhere except their payment page.

I'm still leaving. I might keep the account for commenting, but I'm even rethinking that.

I'm on the fence. There are so few people who post regularly here anymore -- but I'm not sure dreamwidth is any more active and I feel cranky about losing the communities.

Still, the privacy violations I'm hearing rumblings about are alarming. What are you leaning towards?

Honestly, I think the biggest risk is that the servers will be taken down without notice and LJ will disappear, because the Russian authorities now have direct jurisdiction over the server location. At the very least I'm going to be backing up at DW more.

AFAIK, LJ has never really used https for anything other than login and payments, so unless people forced an https connection, then everything else -- posts, comments etc -- has always been fetched over an http connection. I'm not sure whether logins are generally still being handled securely or not (I don't understand how the pop-up login box functions) but https://www.livejournal.com/login.bml is still working fine.

I am just SO MAD that I won't have comms access.

I think that one issue is, with servers in Russia, that the rules about privacy that protect us on US/Canadian servers no longer apply. I don't think it matters much to 99.9% of LJ users, but if you are a) political or b) dabble in fandoms that are less mainstream/have had issues around "is this pedo? is this illegal?" before, that something could happen. (I don't know WHAT. just... delete your journal? turn shit over to the fbi? I know just enough to be freaked out. I need to read more...)

Anyway, I'm going to keep posting at DW with xposts here, but I may turn off comments here, which will suck. But not as much as losing comments if LJ just shuts down.

I don't know. Most people I follow crosspost to DW already but I would miss the few who don't if I left.

On the other hand, I really don't want to give Russian security agencies any information, even though I don't think I'm doing anything that they would be particularly interested in.

(There are multiple ways to download / make backups of your LJ, btw! Importing to DW is just one of them.)
