It is Fat Tuesday and that means Ash Wednesday and Lent loom. I'm sure we're all at least familiar with the idea of giving something up for Lent, so here's my question.

What are you giving up this year? [Not giving something up this year? Make something up!]

I hadn't even heard about giving things up for Lent until I got an LJ, it's not something that's done in Sweden at all. The only reason people are even aware of Fat Tuesday is because traditionally that's the only day you're supposed to eat semlor but these days the shops start selling them right after Christmas and go on until Easter. (I don't like them myself and usually manage to avoid eating one at all.) So no, I'm not planning on giving anything up :-)

Hunh. That's neat! I learn so much from LJ, it's amazing. Growing up giving up for Lent wasn't really... enforced for me. But my Catholic friends did have to do it. I've always used it as an excuse to get rid of a bad habit more than a religious thing.

The semlor sounds.... interesting? Both the traditional and modern 'recipe' sound.... not the tastiest. lol When I'm caring for kids we usually make beignets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beignet) to talk about Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday.

So no, I'm not planning on giving anything up :-)
And rightly so! ;-)

Beignets, mmmmmm! I haven't had any since I was in New Orleans in 1980 but I still remember how good they were.
