(no subject)

It is Fat Tuesday and that means Ash Wednesday and Lent loom. I'm sure we're all at least familiar with the idea of giving something up for Lent, so here's my question.

What are you giving up this year? [Not giving something up this year? Make something up!]

[identity profile] zillahseye.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Drinking! Except for Sundays, because Sundays are feast days and not part of the 40. I LOOKED IT UP. :) Expect a lot of random drunk posting.

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent!

[identity profile] eleanor-lavish.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
you already read this, but carbonated things, and all snacks that aren't popcorn (and corn chips, which i rarely eat, but need for SALSA purposes). Dude, I am hoping I can make this healthy thing stick this time.

Yes, me too! I try to use an Izzard-ism whenever it's possible :D LJ is utter love with the extra icon space, so I get to stuff it with Eddie icons.

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a great list! And I have faith you can stick to a healthier eating style! Mwah.

[identity profile] shinycuba.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I am going to give up Kiki's scarf and the bad!makeup. *nods* I think the world would be happy with that.

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww. Poor Ricky. I like the scarf, but admit I could do without the pale and sickly complexion [whether it's natural or Maybelline]. Who is that insanely short man he's standing with?

[identity profile] megansync.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Me thinks that is Giorgia Armani.

[identity profile] shinycuba.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's most definitely not natural, his complexion isn't that smooth not that pale - look at the color difference between his face and neck ;) And that's Giorgio Armani next to him! I know, the man looks odd, and the bad makeup job doesn't help much either with his appearance.

I hadn't even heard about giving things up for Lent until I got an LJ, it's not something that's done in Sweden at all. The only reason people are even aware of Fat Tuesday is because traditionally that's the only day you're supposed to eat semlor but these days the shops start selling them right after Christmas and go on until Easter. (I don't like them myself and usually manage to avoid eating one at all.) So no, I'm not planning on giving anything up :-)

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hunh. That's neat! I learn so much from LJ, it's amazing. Growing up giving up for Lent wasn't really... enforced for me. But my Catholic friends did have to do it. I've always used it as an excuse to get rid of a bad habit more than a religious thing.

The semlor sounds.... interesting? Both the traditional and modern 'recipe' sound.... not the tastiest. lol When I'm caring for kids we usually make beignets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beignet) to talk about Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday.

So no, I'm not planning on giving anything up :-)
And rightly so! ;-)

turlough: purple crocuses (CAKE!)

[personal profile] turlough 2009-02-24 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Beignets, mmmmmm! I haven't had any since I was in New Orleans in 1980 but I still remember how good they were.

Candy. Chocolate, in particular. Which is hard, but I'm so looking forward to it. I've eaten so much of it lately, simply due to the fact that it's always lying around the house.

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Having it around does make it easier to indulge. Good luck!

[identity profile] megansync.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You know my feelings on the subject (at least somewhat), so my answer is nothing. :) I am only allowing myself a soda on the weekends, and I rarely even do that, so if I need an answer I will say that! :p

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
yeah. And I think the soda is a fine answer. :-D

[personal profile] rikes 2009-02-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
We take Lent very lightly because we're basically all Lutheran over here. :)

But we have semlor, too. And they are very yummy! Not too sweet, so you can eat several. :D

It wouldn't be a bad idea to give something up, though. How about procrastinating, stressing, and emotional eating? Not a bad list, there. Maybe I'll start with just one. :)

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm Episcopal if I have to give it a title and Lent is light for us as well. As I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] turloughishere, it's always been more about giving up a bad habit than anything religious. The timing is good because you get encouragement and when asked 'What did you give up for Lent?' I always had an answer!

Hey, I'll give up the horribly habit of emotional eating if you do. We can commiserate together on it. ;-)

I'm fairly sure I've said this multiple times, but, I love that icon.

[personal profile] rikes 2009-03-08 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think you were being strictly religious - I just meant that since Finland is mostly a Lutheran country, the whole idea of giving something up for Lent barely exists in the culture.

That said, giving up emotional eating is not going too well so far. But I'll keep trying. :)

And thank you. :)

[identity profile] nothinggold.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Vodka and fried food

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
fried food! Good one! As well as the vodka. :-)

Have I ever mentioned that each time you post with that icon I hear C. Thomas Howell reciting it?

[identity profile] nothinggold.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! :)

[identity profile] puszysty.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've never practiced Lent.
I did swear one year, after some boy frustration, that I was giving up men for lent. That didn't work out so well. lol

I am rather disappointed that Austin doesn't have a Polish population and there is no place I can get a pączki.

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
ahahah! One year my 'New Year's Resolution' was to become a lesbian, for much the same reason. ;-) It didn't work out for me either.

I should have put in my post that I don't really associate my giving up something with Lent so much as time it the same. Giving up a bad habit, or instituting a good one are always a good idea, Lent is just an easy time to do it.

Paczki! Mmmm. You can't even find them in the in store bakery of a larger grocery? That's where I find them here and there's no real Polish population here anymore.

[identity profile] puszysty.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think so. HEB is very locally oriented (they only sell 3 flavors of juicy juice and it pisses me off!) and I don't know that there's ever been Polish people around here. I suppose I could look, I need to get ziplocks as it is.

[identity profile] ladymissdiva.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Soda. Because I drink entirely too much of it.

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Good for you. There are loads of other things that are so much better, taste and nutritional value wise. :-D

[identity profile] kare.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Even when I was a practicing Catholic I didn't give up anything...I can just say I'm giving up sex. That seems to work lately.

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should decide to take up sex instead! ;-) Enforced Lent really is more strongly tied to Catholicism, isn't it? I'm surprised at how many people have responded saying: I don't do Lent/take it so seriously. I really didn't mean it so staunchly.

[identity profile] lovecat10036.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I am of no particular religion, so I give nothing up. I am going to attempt to get back on the healthy eating/exercise bandwagon, however. But that is more of a chronic thing.

I am primarily answering because I wanted to teach you another new thing! Here in my neck of the woods, we frequently call Fat Tuesday "Fausnacht Day," after the Pennsylvania Dutch version of the beignet:

For German American populations, such as Pennsylvania Dutch Country, it is known as Fastnacht Day (also spelled Fasnacht, Fausnacht, Fauschnaut, or Fosnacht). The Fastnacht is made from fried potato dough and served with dark corn syrup. In John Updike's novel Rabbit Run, the main character remembers a Fosnacht Day tradition where the last person to rise would be teased by the other family members and called a "Fosnacht." (from Wikipedia)

OMG, they are YUMMY, especially the ones with jelly in them :) I was so tempted to stop by the store and get some tonight, but remembered all I have been eating lately and refrained :(

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's so cool, thank you!! I must look up a recipe and give it a try.

Good for you for being consistent in trying to be better to yourself! the timing of Lent has always been about doing something better for me by giving up bad habits etc. I should really get some sort of habitual exercise.... perhaps I can work that in for 'Lent'.

[identity profile] autumnyte.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm giving up giving something up!

ETA: and I'm not remotely Catholic anyway

haha! An excellent idea!

No, no you're not!

[identity profile] call-me-loca.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm giving up my parents....

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
lol! I think this is an excellent idea!

[identity profile] epicflailer.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
um, if i did the whole lent thing, i'd probably have to give up my sadly pedophilic thoughts about david archuleta. /o\

i just realized i have no idea what you're giving up this year!

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
What would you DO with yourself if you gave that up????

I'm giving up.... well, a few things actually. The mild swearing I've managed to pick up from my last job. [I can't stand it!] Avoiding water, which is more about making sure I drink water than avoiding it really, but. and clutter. I have SO much stuff, most of it just needs to go. Want anything? ;-)

[identity profile] epicflailer.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
probably have more less-pedophilic thoughts about michael castro? *sets brain on fire*

hee! dude, those sound like good ideas, and totally doable too. well, except the clutter, because i'm a packrat and i have no idea how anyone gets rid of anything! although i would not say no to any idol-related stuff you might be disposing of. ;D

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a pack rat by genetics, but it's just insane around here. Things need to go. If I find any AI anything around here I'm calling the police because it will mean somebody broke in! [I don't do AI, lol]. After that, however, I'll happily post it along to you. ;-)

[identity profile] portiarocks74.livejournal.com 2009-02-25 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I am giving up fast food...considered diet coke, but I honestly thing I would kill someone!!!!

Oh...and I am giving up working!

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Fast food is no good for you anyway.

Wait. What? Really??? or is that a bit of daydreaming?

When do I get to meet your son???????

[identity profile] portiarocks74.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I WISH I could give up working...I have so much fun spending time with my munchkin.

You are welcome to come visit and meet the little man ANYTIME! Give me a call (cell phone is listed on Facebook). Looking forward to it!

[identity profile] poofusgirl.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm giving up lima beans!

p.s. - I hate lima beans! :P

[identity profile] msktrnanny.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
lol! good plan then. [they're gross, I don't blame you]
